How Often Should You Cut Your Hair?
The first thing you should know is that it’s just a myth that trimming your hair more often will make it grow faster. The general rule for growing longer hair is that you need to extend how often you cut your hair, while still keeping the ends trimmed to keep split ends at bay. Not everyone’s hair grows at the same rate but the average is around half an inch per month.
Here is a handy set of guidelines for different styles/types of hair and when they need grooming.
Chemical processing, heat styling and hair dyes usually cause permanent damage to the hair. Getting a trim once every four weeks will allow you to gradually grow out the frazzled hair while the healthy roots grow in.
Cutting your bangs every two weeks will ensure that the style will last, especially if they are heavy or blunt. If they are wispy you can get away with leaving them to grow a little longer.
Growth of a short style such as a pixie cut will always show more than on a longer style. To maintain your length then trimming your hair every four to six weeks is recommended.
Medium to Long Hair
The longer your hair is the older and more fragile it becomes. Aim to get a trim every six to eight weeks to maintain the length and every eight to ten weeks to grow it longer.
Dyed/Chemically Treated Hair
Trimming your hair every four to eight weeks will help prevent the hair from splitting. Getting a trim every eight weeks will allow it grow longer.
Hair that has never been coloured or styled with heat can still be healthy with a trim every three months.
Every three months is a good amount of time to wait before you get a trim if you have naturally curly hair. If you want to grow it longer then make sure you only remove a quarter of an inch when you visit the hairdresser.
Thin Fine Hair
Fine hair should be cut every four to six weeks to prevent it from looking limp and lifeless. It’s a good idea to constantly reshape it while maintaining the length.
Cutting your hair can make you feel good about yourself by boosting your confidence. This is a great reason to make a regular appointment with your hair stylist who will be able to devise a hair maintenance schedule to make you feel and look your best!
