Reasons Why Your Hair is Dry and Brittle
We put our hair through a lot on a daily basis, from using hot styling tools to colouring with harsh chemicals. Even using every day hair products can strip the natural oils from our hair. It’s no wonder it can become frazzled, especially during the dry winter months. Take a look at the following reasons why your hair can become dry and brittle and how you can fix your damaged hair for good!
The extreme cold of winter, followed by dry indoor heating can cause hair to become dehydrated. During the summer months the hair can become dry from overexposure to the sun and chlorine from swimming pools.
Hair Smoothing Treatments
There are many products that can be used to make your hair look straight and smooth. However, if you apply the treatments too close together it can leave your hair looking super thirsty due to the buildup of protein which can cause it to become brittle.
Dry and brittle hair can be caused by homone changes in the body resulting from pregnancy, menopause and birth control pills. Our hair also tends to become more brittle as we age.
Using the Wrong Hair Care Products
Stay away from shampoos that will strip the oils from your hair. Even using the wrong shampoo one time can leave your hair dry and lifeless. Try not to wash your hair too often as this will also strip away the natural oils.
Brushing Wet Hair
Brushing your hair when wet can cause breakage leaving the ends brittle and split. It is best to comb your hair when dry and use a leave-in conditioner.
Heat Styling Your Hair
Using blow dryers and curling irons will strip your hair of moisture. Try to keep the temperature below 400 degrees (204 celcius) whenever possible.
Here are some solutions for how to keep your hair in good condition:
- Use more conditioner in the winter, from leave-in conditioners to deep moisturing treatments
- Use an ion blow dryer which dries your hair from the inside out and is easier on your hair
- Straighten your hair with a flat iron when wet using argan oil for a heating conditioning treatment
- Avoid using a blow dryer and let your hair dry naturally
- Use a deep moisturizing conditioner once a week
- If your hair is colour treated use sulfate-free hair formulas
